Burntwood Rugby Club full of optimism

The mood of optimism in the Burntwood camp in their preparations for season 2008-9 was not dispelled after their first trial game last Thursday night under Lichfield RFC's new match floodlights.

After four 20 minute sessions, the visitors scored the only two tries of the evening, both converted by Craig Seedhouse.

With several new and returning players contributing to a healthy turn out at training sessions throughout July and August, the club are hoping to run four senior sides and a Colts XV in the new season and after a summer break without the distractions of rugby league, there were plenty of players keen for action at Cooke Fields.

The tries were scored by skipper Graham Shelley and scrum half Ian Jones but it was the Burntwood defence which really impressed the spectators.

A young Lichfield line-up were guilty of handling errors close to the visitors' line but they were also kept out by some excellent cover tackling.

Mitch Adams, Mark Partridge and David Humphreys distinguished themselves with try-saving efforts while the likes of Craig Goodhall and Rhys Corbally put in some solid hits in midfield.

Burntwood continue their pre-season preparations with two trial games this Saturday.

The 1st team squad travel to take on Wolverhampton whilst the Development XV play at Barton-under-Needwood so there will be plenty for Director of Rugby Eric Stokes, Club Coach Ian Bailey and Assistant Coach Jimmy Davies to mull over as they select sides for the first competitive matches a week later.

Burntwood open their campaign with a trip to Warwickshire to play Bedworth in the 1st Round of the EDF Energy Senior Vase on September 6.

On the same day the Development side visit Aldridge and the 3rds host Cannock 2nds. The colts begin their season with the visit of Nuneaton.

The Junior Section begin their season on Sunday, 7th September with the U16s and U15s both at home to Eccleshall.

A week later Burntwood play their first Midlands 4 West North game when Willenhall come to The Sportsway.

The thirds also welcome Willenhall whilst the Dev. Side travel in the opposite direction accompanied by the Veterans who make their season debut.

The matches will be followed by a live band and disco at The Sportsway clubhouse to kick off the club's social activities for the season.

There are various activities arranged throughout the year.

Nigel Redman is the guest speaker at the club's Annual Dinner on November 15 and an Easter Tour has already been booked for Newquay in Cornwall.

There are few changes in terms of captains and club officials for the coming season.

Graham Shelley retains his position as 1st team skipper, Simon "Bingo" Edwards will lead the Dev. Side, Ade Williams is in line for the 3rds and Mark Willson and Paul Rogers will organise the Veterans.

On the main committee Andy Macey replaces Rogers in the dual roles of Club Captain and Fixture Secretary.

Burntwood RUFC are keen to welcome new players, members and sponsors - just contact the clubhouse on Burntwood 676651.
