Blackpool and Paris are both famous for their towers.
But Cannock’s own landmark Pye Green Tower has become the subject of supernatural speculation on social networking site Facebook.
A group celebrating the iconic structure has swelled to nearly 1,000 members since being set up on February 10 by resident Warren Hughes.
And speculation is rife as to the tower’s origins, and uses within the Mighty Pye Green Tower group.
Suggestions so far include the tower being the home of mythical witches and warlocks, a landing post for UFOs – or perhaps a rocket which will one day take off. And with reports of rocket-men, alien spacecraft, cavemen, and Big-Foot being seen on the Chase, some believe the tower could be the cause of Cannock’s bizarre, X-File incidents.
In his introduction to the group, Warren says: “Many say that it’s the biggest man made structure in the world, easily dwarfing the Burj Dubai hotel which stands at a minuscule 2684ft.
“Some have said that in the right weather it can be seen from wherever you are in the world. It has even been reported that it can be seen from space!
“Many think that you can’t actually see the top of the tower, leading to speculation that it hasn’t got a top and it goes on forever!
“Some people fail to believe that it is man made, believing instead that it was placed by aliens to monitor the local residents of Hednesford.”
Other members have attempted to stifle the hype, saying the tower is simply a telecommunications centre.
Whatever the explanation behind the structure, Warren’s group shows no signs of slowing down as more members join each day to discuss the Hednesford landmark.
