Speed limit rise may be scrapped

Plans to INCREASE the speed limit on a Chase Terrace road which claimed the life of a local youngster look set to be scrapped.

County highways chiefs recently met local residents to ask their views about proposals for Stables Way.

They were considering raising the speed limit to 40 mph - arguing this would enable them to use a package of traffic calming measures.

But according to area highways manager Clive Thomson the meeting showed “there is a general consensus that the 30 mph limit needs to be retained at this time.”

Mr Thomson said the meeting was ‘extremely useful’ and that officers would be having further discussions with police.

“We are arranging for the mobile safety camera team to be deployed on Stables Way and will be looking at what we will need to do to support this enforcement,” he said.

“This is a very sensitive time and we want local people to feel secure in the measures we introduce while ensuring they are effective and enforceable.”

County councillor Eric Drinkwater said the public meeting had been ‘very emotional for everyone involved’.

“We have enormous sympathy with the local community and are determined to deliver a package of measures that will be both effective and meet local community expectations,” he added.

Thomas Knight, aged 11, died when he was in collision with a car on Stables Way in March this year.
